Biography of Alexandre Charles Masson ( 20th Century, French )

Masson’s work was predominetly figurative but as can be seen in this wonderful harbor scene he was also a talented landscape painter. Working in a muted, autumnal palette Masson has imbued the subject with a cool light capturing perfectly a quiet seaside harbor at low tide. One supposes that it is a Normandy scene, the closest coastal area to his atelier in Paris, perhaps the town of Deauville.

Alexandre Charles Masson was born in Paris around 1880. He is remembered for his delicate depictions of mythological imagery as well as a number of animalier subjects. He exhibited regularly at the principal Paris institutions, particularly at the Salon des Artistes Francais. It was at this Salon where he received an honorable mention for his exhibit of 1906.
