Gabriel Griffon

1866 - 1938, French

Born in 1866 in Toulouse and died in 1938, Gabriel Griffon produced landscapes in light tones, populated by numerous characters, reduced to a harmonious symphony of light spots. It presents in a caressing light subjects of gallant festivals, rounds of bathers, meadows streaked with sun and populated by nymphs and fauns evoking the mythology and the gallant scenes of the French School of the 18th century (Watteau, Lancret … ) An appreciated sculptor, working for a long time in Bordeaux, he then divided his life between Nice and Agen (his house at 17 rue Carnot became the Griffon Museum). He who at the beginning was only a Sunday painter quickly saw his reputation increase.
