John Gunson Atkinson was a prolific landscape painter from London. He exhibited mostly at the Society of British Artists at Suffolk Street, but also showed works at the British Institution and Royal Academy from 1854 to 1874. Like many of his works, this scene is probably a view of Wales, with a commentary on the working class gathering hay during the harvest.
