Biography of Max Papart ( 1911-1994, French )

Max Papart was born in Marseilles in 1911 but studied in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.  He began his professional career as a landscape painter but his work eventually would evolve into Abstraction and he gained a reputation as the heir to Classic Cubism.  Through the years he developed affinities with other styles and schools.  Elements of Etruscan, archaic European, African and pre-Columbian art influenced his work leading to his distinctive semi-figurative style.  During the 1950’s Max Papart worked almost exclusively in the medium of collage.  After World War Two he traveled throughout the world where galleries where keen to show his work.His paintings were exhibited at all of the premier Paris institutions where they were well received by the public and critics alike.  Paintings by Max Papart are housed in an extraordinary number of International museums including Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Musee d’Art Moderne, Paris; Israel Museum, Jerusalem and at Yale University in the United States. This particular example of his work displays his keen sense of style and can be dated to around 1955.
